Bitting Injuries in Young Horses: Managing Mouthing During Breaking
The early stages of breaking a young horse are a crucial period in its education. Introducing a bit is often the first time the horse experiences pressure within the sensitive structures of the mouth. While most horses adapt quickly with correct handling, mild bitting injuries are extremely common and, if unmanaged, can influence behaviour, confidence and long-term rideability.
Why Bit Sores Occur in Young Horses
The equine mouth contains delicate tissues including the lips, bars and the tongue all of which are rich in nerves and blood supply. During mouthing, young horses naturally chew, move the tongue and resist unfamiliar pressure. Even with sympathetic training, this adaptation period frequently results in:
•   Small cuts at the corners of the mouth
•   Rubs on the bars
•   Tongue irritation
•   Local inflammation
•   Sensitivity to rein contact
These minor injuries may seem insignificant but often cause resistance behaviours such as head tossing, opening the mouth, leaning on the bit or avoiding contact. If discomfort becomes associated with the rider’s hands, the horse may develop lasting contact problems that persist into its ridden career.
Preventing Mouth Problems During Breaking
Good mouthing management begins before the bit is introduced. A dental examination should ensure sharp enamel points, wolf teeth or retained caps are not contributing to discomfort. Selecting a correctly fitted bit suited to the horse’s mouth conformation is equally important.
Training sessions should remain short and positive while tissues adapt to pressure. However, even with careful management, minor abrasions are difficult to avoid during the early breaking phase. Keeping the mouth clean and comfortable helps prevent small lesions from developing into painful bit sores.
Supporting Healing with Effident
Hypochlorous acid (HOCl) is a naturally occurring molecule produced by the horse’s immune system to support healing and control bacteria. Effident, Plusvital’s HOCl oral care solution for horses, helps maintain hygiene in sensitive tissues without causing irritation.
For young horses experiencing bitting injuries, Effident can:
•   Clean small cuts and abrasions without stinging
•   Support natural tissue repair
•   Reduce bacterial contamination
•   Calm inflamed areas
•   Maintain comfort during training
Because HOCl is gentle and safe on mucosal surfaces, it is ideal for equine mouth care where stronger antiseptics would create aversion to the bit.
Applying Effident after training sessions helps prevent minor rubs from progressing into painful sores that interrupt training schedules. Maintaining comfort encourages relaxation into the contact and promotes acceptance of the bridle.
Setting the Foundation for Future Performance
The mouthing phase shapes how a horse responds to the bit for the rest of its life. Small discomforts, if ignored, can lead to defensive habits and long-term performance issues.
By combining correct bitting, sympathetic training and proper oral hygiene using Effident, young horses can develop confidence in the contact. Protecting mouth comfort during breaking supports a calmer, more willing horse and lays the foundation for future performance.
