Racing GenePak
The results of the Racing GenePak will help you to:
- Refine optimum race distance
- Increase strike rates and earnings through optimised training and racing decisions
- Identify prospects suited to dirt or turf racing
The Speed Gene is the most important contributor to best race distance, accounting for almost 50% of the genetic variation on its own. However, refining the best race distance requires a more complex arrangement of genetic markers.
Building on any results generated from the Speed Gene Test, the Racing GenePak further refines the predicted optimum race distance to within a couple of furlongs, sub-categorising the Speed Gene types into “Short” or “Long” (e.g. C:T – Short or C:T – Long). The Racing GenePak analyses 50,000 genetic markers to provide an enhanced level of information when combined with the Speed Gene Test.

- Identify prospects suited to dirt or turf racing
The Speed Gene Test determines optimum race distance and performance potential, with over 90% accuracy, by categorising horses into three distinct types:
C:C Sprint/Mile Types
C:T Middle Distance Types
T:T Staying Types
It also provides racehorse breeders with the potential to produce more early-maturing or classic types depending on their preference.
The Dirt vs Turf Test may also be added to the Racing GenePak to indicate whether a horse is genetically better suited to performing on dirt or turf surfaces.
The Dirt vs Turf Test
The Dirt vs Turf Test identifies whether the horse’s genetic race preference is a dirt or turf surface and may also be added to the Racing GenePak.
Many consider surface preference to be indicated by pedigree and physical type since sires are often ranked according to the success of their progeny on different surfaces. However, it is often unclear until a horse has raced a number of times as to which surface it is best suited to. Similarly, some stallions can produce progeny with different surface preferences and with the global movement of stallions, pedigree may not always be the best indicator of a horse’s surface preference type.
